Hypnotism, what it is and what it is not

hypnotismIf you have been asked to go into a meditative state when the person who is treating you for a certain disorder, chances are that you have visited a hypnotherapist who practices an art by the name of Hypnotism. Ever since people have started practicing Hypnotism, there is considerable amount of interest on what this art is and what this isn’t. The comparison brings to forth one of the most interesting studies we had seen for a long, long time.

Practitioners of Hypnotism say that hypnotism allows the mind to go in a state when it could be manipulated easily by an external force. Now, what you would see in Hypnotism is a person, normally the hypnotist, using techniques to get over to the state of mind of the individual he is treating. Once that happens, the hypnotist suggests new measures, which could allow the individual to tackle with the problem he or she is facing.

A survey reveals that about 25% of people can be easily hypnotized, while 20% of them cannot be hypnotized at all. This obviously tells you one thing about Hypnotism – Hypnotism is not a foolproof and a scientifically validated art. It also tells you that different people would react to Hypnotism differently. Based on what we read on Hypnotism, we can say that it is almost like a trance effect.

It may sound complex, but let us try to make it simpler by means of an example.

Hypnosis stops smoking

Hypnosis stops smoking

Assume that you are a chain smoker and finding it very hard to get rid of the habit. Let us assume you have visited a hypnotist and told him about your problem. The hypnotist will ask you to go into a concentrative state and think of all the things that made you smoke. In the Hypnotism session, he would also ask you to imagine of wonderful sights in life that he could see, if he would have quit smoking. He repeats and reiterates these thoughts to you, and at some point of time during the Hypnotism treatment, he would ask you to repeat what he said. Now, when this happens, the hypnotist has taken control of the perceptive reactions of the individual.

What happens after a Hypnotism session is not in the control of the hypnotist. It may so happen that after the Hypnotism session has perceivably succeeded, the person may come out of the room and do exactly the opposite.

Neuro Linguistic Programming

John Grinder is the co-founder of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) with Dr. Richard Bandler.  He is a graduate in psychology from the University of San Francisco. He served in the US military and also the US intelligence agency.  John Grinder later acquired a Ph D in Linguistics from the University of California in San Diego in the late 1960s.

Dr John GrinderJohn Grinder distinguished in the field of linguistics; especially in the area of syntax. He was later appointed as a professor of linguistics in the newly founded University of California in Santa Cruz. He has many books to his credit and some of his exception work can be seen in books like On Deletion Phenomena in English (1972) and Guide to Transformational Grammar (1973) among various other articles.

Grinder went on to develop a new field called the Neuro Linguistic Programming along with Richard Bandler, who was then a student of psychology. It all started when Bandler invited Grinder to participate in his therapy groups. Grinder was enthralled by the ways in which the therapists used their linguistic patterns to give effective results on their patients.

This lead John Grinder along with Richard Bandler to come up with a model called as Neuro Linguistic Programming. This was derived from the theory of transformational grammar and the language patterns used by effective therapists like Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Hypnotherapist Milton H. Erickson.

The model of NLP was further developed using various books published by these therapists which became a foundation of Neuro Linguistic Programming. John Grinder has co-founded many other books on NLP and its techniques and applications.

People all over the world have greatly benefited from the NLP techniques in improving self-confidence which has lead them to successful personal and professional achievements. The NLP model came as a boon to many people who lacked certain qualities that are required to make it big in this competitive world.brain-power

John Grinder along with Richard Bandler has created a relatively unique technique to make your mind work into positive things and achieve what’s best for you. NLP teaches you techniques on self-improvisation and also helps you gauge the personality of people around you. It’s important that one has his thoughts, feelings, words and behavior in perfect coordination to give out the required results.

Once your thoughts, words and actions are in alignment you’ll be in a better position to get your message across to your audience in an effective way and most importantly in the way you intended it to be.
